Prevent Vacation Weight Gain – Healthy Remedies

Added/Modified on November 12, 2016

For many of us, vacation is a time to relax by sitting around, napping, sipping cocktails, eating indulgent foods, and leaving our worries behind. Unfortunately, all that “sitting around” and comfort food could cause vacation weight gain and bloat. Here’s how to have fun on vacation—and eat the foods you want while making sure your figure is still in tip-top shape when you return.

Rent a condo or an apartment

Studies show that the more frequently you eat out, the more likely you are to have weight gain, because restaurants load you up with hidden calories. If possible, book accommodations with a kitchen; it may cost slightly more, but you’ll save a bundle by cooking. Aim to prepare all your breakfasts, plus either lunch or dinner each day. With that in mind, make a grocery list on the plane. Tear off a section for each family member so that you can stop at the store, and divide and conquer, on the way to your vacation destination.

Plan your meals ahead

Pack (or pick up) a sandwich on whole wheat, always carry some nuts, and toss an orange in your purse. With their healthy fats and fiber, the nuts will keep hunger at bay. At restaurants, plan in advance to just eat half. Ask your server when you order to bag up the other half, and savor it for lunch the next day. Finally, when you’re on the road, skip the drive-thru and hit a deli. Get turkey on whole wheat, an apple and fat-free yogurt for less than 350 calories!

Be wise about your food choices

Waffles and pancakes look tempting, but think of them as set decorations. Instead, greet the sunrise with a protein-rich shake or an egg-white omelet to kick-start your metabolism and keep you satisfied. Later in the day, enjoy your favorite fruity concoction with lunch or a glass of wine with dinner, but when you’re lounging by the pool, strolling the deck, or playing a midnight game of poker, order an alcohol-free fruit smoothie in a 5-ounce glass for about 90 calories, or opt for a seltzer spiked with juice and lime for around 30 calories. Green tea, which revs your metabolism, is another great option. By night, avoid drinks with cocktail umbrellas and fruit juice (there are 350 calories for a pina colada!) and for for red wine, instead. And if you hit a buffet—common at hotels and on cruise ships—always use the salad plate. Be it for the breakfast bar, lunch buffet, or dinner entrée, this tried-and-true trick will help keep your portions in control.

Put exercise on your itinerary

Trust us: You’ll be happier and feel healthier if you squeeze in some activity while you’re away—and exploring a new city on foot definitely counts. If you’re in more of a resort-type setting, take advantage of the hotel gym or swimming pool (even most small hotels have fitness centers now). If you don’t want to spend precious vacation time in your hotel gym, get out and try something new. Depending on where you’re staying, you might want to try inline skating or kayaking, or do bike tours or nature hikes. Even 20 minutes a day will help boost your energy levels (essential for all-day sightseeing) and take away some of the guilt from those indulgent vacation dinners.

Home Remedies For Snoring – Healthy Remedies

Added/Modified on October 25, 2016

Are you fed up of your bed partner yelling at you in the morning when you got up? Are you alleged to produce disastrous sounds while sleeping? The abhorrent sound produced while sleeping due to obstruction of air is called snoring. Odious because it sounds terrible, disturbs others and absorbs potential to affect your health drastically. Snoring or sleep apnea reflects difficulty in breathing.

If you feel deeply trapped by it and hate consulting a doctor, try these lucid home remedies that require little lifestyle changes and will power to kill snoring.

Home Remedies For Snoring

Cleanse your Nasal Passages

The less easy you breathe, the more you snore. A blocked nose ceases free flow of air through the nostrils that further creates vacuum and leads to snoring. However, explicitly clearing your nose will cleanse your throat and help you breathe easy.

Drink Warm Beverages

Warm beverages efficiently cover the trachea walls. Drinks such as honey and warm water, a glass of hot milk with a pinch of turmeric and pepper, green tea and organic tulsi tea prepares you for a sound sleep.

Chamomile tea is a mild sedative, which will help you soothe your mind and get a sound sleep. Ginger Ale, also gives you relief from snoring. Boil fresh Ginger in water and add sugar. Drinking this mixture will relax your throat muscles effectively.

Use Humidifiers

A humidifier is an appliance that increases moisture in the house. Dryness irritates the membranes in the nose and throat, thus causing snoring. However, keeping bedroom air moist expels the arid air. Put on the device before sleeping and let it push the dryness out. The best one is a Vaporizer that boils water and releases steam into the room. It is a low cost appliance and best suited for household use.

Keep Your Head High

Sleeping with your head in a higher position (four inches above body) empower your tongue and jaw to move forward. This prevents frequent mouth opening and stops snoring.

Specially designed pillows keep your head in a higher position and avoid your neck from crimping.

Sleep on One Side

Sleeping straight on back has a gravitational effect on snoring. Gravity makes tongue tissues to drop and obstruct the air passage. The most effective way is sewing a tennis ball at the back of your pajamas. In deep sleep, it would discourage you from sleeping straight and force sleeping on one side.

A Pair of Nasal Strips

Nasal blockages due to allergies or sickness force breathing from mouth that leads to snoring. Nasal strips open your nostrils and make way for moist air to pass easily, thus encouraging nasal breathing and control snoring.

Comfortable enough that you don’t even feel something on your nose is working to suppress the loud noise. Start wearing them today and use regularly.

Open Face Chin Straps

Snoring Chin straps resemble a monkey cap, open in front, covering your chin and stretch over your head. Specially designed to keep your mouth closed while you sleep, they force breathing from nose and subsequently clear the blockages. Chin traps in different sizes and fabrics are available.

Besides these, little lifestyle changes such as cutting down on your smoking and alcohol will significantly control snoring. Moreover exercising regularly or practicing Yoga improves blood circulation that indirectly check snoring tendency. Consulting a doctor is wise, but home remedies produce better results, always.

Why Does My Dog Eat Poop? – Healthy Remedies

Added/Modified on November 8, 2016

Copraphagia (poop eating) is usually a nasty learned habit and not a medical problem. Here are the top reasons why dogs eat poop and what you can do to curb their appetite!

1. Oral fixation habit—puppies (like human children) go through a phase where they put anything and everything in their mouths in order to investigate. Unfortunately, this often includes feces. As dogs mature, usually this habit goes away…but not always.
Vet Tip: encourage oral investigation of toys and other objects. Do not punish or give excessive attention if your puppy does eat feces—this will just reinforce the behavior.

2. Allelomimetic behavior—this is the fancy name for learned behavior. If your dog watches you pick up poop, he can learn to do the same. If his beloved master is doing it, why shouldn’t he…?
Vet Tip: Clean the poop out of the yard when your dog is not around!

3. Attention getting behavior—many dog owners get very upset when their dog eats poop…which means he is getting the attention he desires. Although it is negative attention, it is attention nonetheless.
Vet Tip: Try not to react so negatively when you know your dog has been snacking on his poo. Pretty soon it will lose its novelty and without your attention, many times they drop the behavior.

4. Housekeeping—dogs that are crated, kenneled, or even kept in one room within the house will learn to function as their own housekeeper. In other words, if they poop in their space, they will “clean up” the only way they know how!
Vet Tip: Clean any feces up immediately. If your dog is crated throughout the day, consider hiring a dog walker or someone to come in during the day to clean up.

5. Hiding the evidence—if your dog is reprimanded for pooping (for example, in his crate or other space), he may eat the poop to stop you from finding it and getting angry.
Vet Tip: Tone it down if your dog poops in the cage. Don’t punish the dog or you may have a nasty habit to deal with.

6. Genetics/Instinct—there are some breeds that are “carriers”…they carry poop around and may or may not eat it. Also, if your dog has puppies, she is likely to eat their poop. This is an instinct to hide the poop from predators.
Vet Tip: This instinct usually goes away in a mother dog. Otherwise, the best you can do is to teach the “leave it” command and be a meticulous cleaner!

7. Food problems—If a dog is not getting a nutritionally balanced diet (rare, these days), or eating a poor quality food, they may be eating their poop because of a deficiency. If your dog is eating too little or eating too much, they can also engage in poop-eating.
Vet Tip: always feed a high quality, nutritionally balanced diet in the correct quantities (work with your vet) to maintain your dog’s ideal weight.

8. Medical problems—this is the least likely reason for your dog to eat poop. If a dog is plagued with parasites or problems that cause maldigestion or malabsorption, they may eat poop.
Vet Tip: Have your vet check your dog for parasites and perform a general health check. Remember, if your dog eats poop routinely, they are more likely to acquire parasites and you should have them checked 2-3 times a year.

If all else fails, some dogs respond positively to the addition of fresh pineapple to their food. The natural enzyme in pineapple causes their poop to taste distasteful to them…as if it wasn’t distasteful enough!

Importance of Proper Eye Care in Pets – Healthy Remedies

Added/Modified on October 8, 2016

Keeping pets’ eyes clean contribute to their health and wellness by preventing irritation and infection that can be painful and possibly lead to loss of vision. Pets have very few effective or safe ways to clean their own eyes—they either rub their eyes with paws (that have sharp toenails!) or rub their faces on the carpeting or furniture. These methods can lead to scratches on the eye surface or irritation of the skin around the eye. It is best that pet owners perform a weekly examination and cleaning to keep their best friends’ eyes healthy.

What are signs that your pet may have an eye infection or other eye problem?

Healthy eyes should be clear and moist. If there is any redness, discharge or swelling of the surrounding skin, there may be an eye infection or other problem. Examine the white part of the eyes (sclera) and the pink tissue of the eyes (conjunctiva) for any discoloration (yellow or bruising) or large engorged blood vessels. The black center of the eye (pupil) should be examined for cloudiness or bluish discoloration. Older pets can develop age-related cloudiness (called nuclear sclerosis) and it is important to have your veterinarian distinguish between this and cataracts. Also check that the pupils are the same size. The colored portion around the pupil is the iris and should be examined for black or red spots or growths. As pets age, the iris can develop ragged edges and is considered normal. Alert your veterinarian to any changes that you notice.

Proper preventive eye care includes:

1. Weekly examination to look for eye problems. Contact your veterinarian with any questions or concerns.

2. Weekly cleaning—see directions below. Some pets may require more frequent cleaning to keep their eyes healthy and comfortable.

3. Address tear staining. Light-colored pets may develop brown or pink stains on the skin and hair below the inside corner of the eye. This happens when bacteria and yeast on the hair and skin react with the tears. Many dogs and cats have an underlying problem causing their tear staining, including clogged or shallow tear ducts, excessive tearing, allergies, or eye irritation caused by abnormal eyelids or eyelashes. You should have your veterinarian examine your pet to determine if they have a condition that can be corrected.

4. Keeping eyes clear of mucus. Just like humans, pets can have “sleepies” (rheum) in the morning and have mucus discharge after being exposed to wind, dirt and pollen. Your pet will be most comfortable to have mucus removed frequently. Infections are often caused by bacteria that overgrow on mucus…so keep the sleepies away!

5. Keeping hair trimmed away from the eyes. Scratches can occur if hair rubs against the surface of the eye (cornea). This is particularly important in breeds that have skin folds near the eye (Lhasa Apso, Shih Tzu, Bulldog, Persian cat, Himalayan cat, etc). Hair around the eye can also “pull” tears out of the eyes and cause tear staining as well as a dryer, less comfortable eye. It is always important to use blunt-nosed scissors when working around the eye.

6. Apply an eye lubricant ointment before bathing, cleaning the face, or applying topical insecticides to prevent eye irritation from grooming supplies.

Cleaning your pets’ eyes

Natural pet products that are slightly acidic and contain natural antiseptic and antimicrobial properties are recommended for routine weekly eye cleaning. Halo Herbal Eye Wash is an excellent natural pet product that is gentle enough to use daily and helps to open clogged tear ducts to prevent infection.

Directions for eye cleaning:

1. With a warm moist cloth, remove any debris at the corner of the eyes or on the skin around the eyes.

2. Hold the dropper or bottle using your thumb and index finger. Rest this hand on top of the pet’s head to help stabilize your hand.

3. With your other hand, use your thumb to pull down the lower eyelid. The lower eyelid acts as a pouch to receive the drops.

4. Hold the dropper or bottle close to the eye but do not touch the eye’s surface.

5. Squeeze the correct number of drops onto the eyeball, aiming for the center of the eye and then release the head.

6. Your pet will blink which spreads the cleaning solution over the surface of the eye.

7. Wipe any excess cleaning fluid, tears or debris away from the eyes.

8. Praise your pet and offer a healthy natural treat when you are finished!

Follow these guidelines to keep your pets’ eyes healthy. If you suspect a problem, contact your veterinarian for advice.

Now the lemon water is turned into an alkaline beverage and detox flush. This is a great tasting beverage that anyone will love to drink. This lemon water works in different ways to reduce water retention in your body. Lemon juice has the power to improve the kidney function that will aid in eliminating excess water in the body. Moreover, drinking lime water helps to detoxify your body and helps to eliminate potentially harmful body acids.

Eat a slice of water melon regularly if your body suffers bloating. Water melon contains good amount of minerals such as magnesium and potassium. It is also a great source of vitamin A and C, and also B1 and B6.

Pineapple is one of the most common home remedies for water retention. This fruit is rich in minerals and vitamins. Additionally, this fruit has a complex substance called bromelain that contains digestive enzymes. In addition to reducing the inflammation, pineapple also provides relief from excess inflammation.

Bananas are apt to help you fight water retention at ease. Bananas are rich in potassium which plays a major role in reducing water storage in the body. You can either have them plain or can slice them up in your daily cereal. Banana shakes can also make a healthy potassium diet apart from being a filling meal.

Just eat fruits as your snack or salad with your meal. This will help you to eliminate the excess water content in your body and also gives many health benefits.

Intake of Vegetables

Many vegetables such as asparagus, cucumber, celery, cabbage, Swiss chard, and artichokes have natural diuretic properties. You can consume these vegetables as salads or fresh fruit juice. You can also consume these vegetables steamed. But make sure that you don’t steam the vegetables too much. That’s because too much steaming could destroy the vitamins in the vegetables.

Herbal Teas

Drinking herbal teas such as burdock root, parsley, dandelion root, alfalfa and chamomile help to get rid of excess fluids in the body. You can just get these herbs from any brick and mortar herbal stores or online stores.

Eating Fiber Rich Foods

Consuming fiber rich foods is one of the best ways to keep your body safe from water retention. Fiber prevents constipation and absorbs water from your system. If you are unable to consume fiber rich foods, then you can consume psyllium powder by adding it in 8 oz of water. Make sure that you stir the mixture well before you consume. If you are taking fiber rich foods, then make sure that you drink more water so that excess fiber doesn’t affect your intestine.

Drink Plenty of Water

Many people who suffer from water retention avoid drinking water. This is not a good idea as it causes dehydration and hence the body will tend to retain more fluids. Hence it is better to drink 8-10 glasses of water in a day to ensure that the excess body liquids get flushed out of the system.

For women who are suffering problems of water retention as a premenstrual syndrome, this is the best solution on offer. It helps in reducing the increase in body weight during the premenstrual period.

It is important to know that too many rich foods can lead to water retention and as a result bloating of the body. To ensure that the body strikes a right balance, consuming yogurt can help. It is necessary though to take yogurt that contains natural active cultures. These active cultures help in the digestion process and ensure that the body does not retain any additional water than what is necessary for its functioning. It also aids in supporting good bacteria in the gut which helps in proper digestion functions as well.

Ice Packs

Water retention can lead to swollen feet and legs. The best home remedy for this is to treat it with ice packs. Applying ice packs can reduce the swelling and can bring your leg back to its normal condition. You can place the ice cubes on a sealed plastic bag and wrap it around in a towel.

You can apply it on the swelling for five to ten minutes at a stretch in order to be effective. Dipping your swollen legs in ice water during the summer months can help as well. But for all those diabetes patients, it is necessary to consult a physician before taking this ice bath.

Be High on Potassium and Low on Sodium

It is important to know that sodium is a major contributor to water retention in the body. Therefore it is preferred to avoid high salty food intake. As a matter of fact it is advisable to reduce the intake of salt and increase the intake of potassium. Potassium helps in maintaining a fluid balance in the system which would go a long way in curing your water retention problems.

Vitamins A and C

Vitamins A and C play an important role in diminishing the fragility of the capillaries and help in decreasing problems associated with water retention. Therefore it is recommended to consume foods that are high on these two vitamins to aid in the process.
