Benzoin essential oil or Onycha (Styrax benzoin) is an essence that is extracted from the gum resin. When it is mixed with alcohol it is referred to as tincture of benzoin. It is a natural anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and natural wound healer. It can be used as a home remedy for bronchitis, rheumatism and skin.

Benzoin tincture was used for over 200 years as an antiseptic in hospitals prior to World War II because of its antimicrobial properties. In some parts of the world, they are returning to its use, as more super bugs become resistant to synthetically made antiseptics.

Benzoin is a “warm” oil that helps the cardiovascular system, emotions and the skin.

What is the Genus Species? Styrax benzoin. Its common name is Onycha, Benzoin, Styrax, Friar’s Balm, Benjamin Tree and Java Frankincense. When it is mixed with ethyl alcohol it is referred to as tincture of benzoin.

Why is this information important? It’s always important to know your genus species of your oil. Just the common name on the bottle doesn’t really tell you exactly what you’re getting.

Where did the name come from? Onycha derived from Hebrew “shechelet”, derived from an Arabic word “husks of wheat or barley”. Styrax means fragrant gum and benzoin means incense of Java.

Why know about this number? ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. It tells you the antioxidant capacity of a food item. Antioxidants have shown to reduce the risk of age related conditions and cancer! This was developed by the USDA researchers. For instance: Oranges = 750; Clove = 1,078,700. Wow! The number for clove is NOT a typo!

Benzoin oil also can cleanse and purify the spirit. It helps to release the energy of suppression and feelings of being eliminated or annihilated. It promotes feelings of liberation, freedom and emancipation.

How do I use it?

Use NEAT (undiluted). Then,

• Apply several drops (2-4) on location

• Apply to chakras/vitaflex points

• Directly inhale

• Diffuse or

• Dietary Supplement.

Can this Oil be used for Pets? Yes, but I would use Purification instead. More readily available and great for ticks, fleas and flies as well.

Note about Animal Use: Certain oils can be very toxic to cats. Citrus and pine oils in particular when using non therapeutic grade oils. Please consult your vet if you are not sure about applying any essential oil to your pet.

What are the Safety Precautions? First, only use therapeutic grade essential oils for therapeutic results! Benzoin essential oil is approved by the FDA as a Food Additive (FA) and Flavoring Agent (FL). Although it may be used as a dietary supplement, it is advised not to use it in this manner for children under 6 years of age.
