The problem of spider veins is medically known as “Telangiestasia” or “Sunburst Varicosities’’. This problem is caused by factors such as improper blood circulation, weakening of veins, hormonal changes or inflammation of the veins. It may result in itching, swelling, burning sensation, cramping or aching, fatigue and so on.

An individual may obtain relief from this problem with the use of herbs. Some of the commonly used herbal remedies are discussed below.

Gotu Kola

Gotu kola is an effective herb for spider veins. Application of gotu kola extract on the affected area can provide relief. Drinking a cup of tea made by steeping dried gotu kola (1 teaspoon) in water (1 cup) multiple times can provide the desired results. Gotu kola tincture (10 to 20 drops) can also be consumed 2 to 3 times in a day. It is essential to consult a doctor before using this herb.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is also known as ‘’Hamamelis Virginiana’’. Witch hazel has astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. Application of witch hazel extract with the help of a cotton ball on the affected area can provide effective results.

A piece of cloth soaked in a solution made by mixing witch hazel extract in water can be directly applied on the affected area to treat the burning sensation.

Horse Chestnut

Horse chestnut is frequently referred to as ‘’Aesculus Hippocastanum’’. Horse chestnut contains aescin which can help in improving the strength of veins. Consumption of horse chestnut on a regular basis can cure various symptoms associated with spider veins. Alternatively, horse chestnut tincture (2 teaspoons) can also be consumed several times to obtain effective results. This herb is not recommended for individuals suffering from kidney or liver problems.

Butcher’s Broom

Butcher’s broom is also known as ‘’Box Holly’’ or ‘’Knee Holly’’. This herb can help in strengthening the veins and increasing blood circulation. Butcher’s broom extract can be directly applied on the affected part of the body.

Consumption of butcher’s broom (half teaspoon) on a regular basis can provide effective results. Butcher’s broom tincture diluted with water can also be consumed on a frequent basis.

Bilberry

Bilberry can help in stimulating capillary formation and strengthen capillary walls. Dried bilberries (2 teaspoons) can be consumed 2 to 3 times in a day. Bilberry leaves can be mixed with water to prepare tea and consumed multiple times on a daily basis to reduce the swelling resulting from spider veins.

It is interesting to note that bilberry can also be consumed in the form of a jam. People suffering from diabetes and blood clotting disorders should not use this herb.

Aloe Vera

Another herbal remedy is aloe vera. The gel extracted from the aloe vera plant can be directly applied on the affected area several times in a day.

Aloe vera gel mixed with turmeric powder can be applied on the affected area in order to obtain the desired results. Intake of aloe vera juice diluted with water 2 to 3 times on a daily basis may also help in the treatment of spider veins.
