Athlete’s foot is caused by a fungal infection. This problem is medically known as “Tinea Pedis” and can occur on any part of the foot. It is important to note that athlete’s foot is a communicable disease. Wearing uncomfortable shoes or keeping feet wet for a long period of time can result in this infection.

An individual suffering from this disease should not share his/her shoes with others. Common symptoms include cracked, flaking and peeling skin between the toes or corners of the foot. It may also result in redness, itching, pain and burning sensation. Athlete’s foot may be cured with the use of various natural remedies.

Oregon Grape Root

Oregon grape root can be used to treat the fungal infection. It is also referred to as “Mahonia Aquifolium”. The root bark and stem bark of oregon grape root are frequently used to obtain relief from different health related issues including foot fungus. An individual can wash his/her feet with the extract of oregon grape root to get the desired results.

Vinegar

An individual can soak his/her feet in a mixture of vinegar, epsom salt and water on a regular basis to cure the infection. Use of this natural remedy can also help in soothing the skin. Rubbing the affected foot with a cotton ball soaked in vinegar can also provide the desired results. This process should be performed both in the morning and at night before going to bed for a period of 2 to 3 weeks.

Cornstarch

Cornstarch can be sprinkled in the shoes and socks. This remedy can help in absorbing the foot moisture and reduce the infection. Another option is to rub cornstarch on the affected foot.

Cinnamon

An individual can take a foot bath with cinnamon tea to obtain relief from the problem of athlete’s foot. This tea can be easily prepared by boiling cinnamon sticks (7 to 10) in water (4 cups). Soaking feet in this tea for a period of 20 to 30 minutes on a regular basis can give highly effective results.

Garlic

Garlic has antifungal properties. Eating garlic on a daily basis can help in reducing the fungal infection. Application of garlic juice on the affected part of the foot with the use of a clean cotton swab can also provide the desired results.

A paste prepared by mixing crushed garlic and a few drops of olive oil can be directly applied on the nail affected by the fungal infection.

Lemon

Lemon water prepared by mixing lemon juice with water can be used to wash the feet to control the sweat and reduce the infection. This natural remedy can also help in controlling the odour resulting from sweaty foot.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil (around 40 drops) can be added to a bucket of water. An individual is required to soak his/her feet in this water for 10 to 15 minutes.

Massaging the affected area with a few drops of this oil after drying the feet is essential to destroy the fungus. It is interesting to note that this remedy can also help in controlling the growth of infection resulting in athlete’s foot.
