0

The thyroid hormone plays an important role in regulating the metabolism process of the body. An underactive thyroid gland cannot produce enough hormones needed for maintaining the normal metabolism process of the body. This condition, known as hypothyroidism, by slowing down the metabolism rate of the body, lowers the pulse rate, causes fatigue, weight gain, menstrual problem and several other health disorders.

Replacing the thyroid hormone is the standard treatment for hypothyroidism. However, the thyroid gland can be stimulated naturally with certain supplements and dietary modifications. Hydrotherapy can also be used for stimulating the thyroid gland.

Natural Ways to Cure Underactive Thyroid

Increase Selenium Intake

Selenium is an important trace mineral needed for sustaining the function of the thyroid glands. By preventing inflammation of the thyroid gland, selenium enables the thyroid gland to maintain its normal activities. In addition, it enables the body to use the thyroid hormone T3. Consuming at least 200 micrograms of selenium is considered sufficient for stimulating the underactive thyroid gland.

Withania Somnifera Supplement

Withania somnifera, commonly known as ashwagandha, is used as an herbal remedy for hypothyroidism. By stimulating the thyroid gland, it helps to increase serum concentration of the T3 and T4 thyroid hormones. Moreover, withania somnifera is also beneficial for the liver. Impaired thyroid function affects liver function, which in turn by modulating metabolism of the thyroid hormone causes diseases that affect the thyroid and the liver.

Bauhinia Purpurea Bark Extract

Studies suggest that Bauhinia purpurea bark extract can improve thyroid function. Regular intake of Bauhinia purpurea supplement helps to enhance production of thyroid hormones.

By improving liver function, this herbal remedy for underactive thyroid gland prevents liver malfunction due to hypothyroidism.

Guggul Supplement

The resin of the mukul myrrh tree, commonly known as guggul, is recommended in the traditional medicine system of India for treating hypothyroidism. Z-guggulsterone, a bioactive constituent of guggul, stimulates the underactive thyroid gland, thereby increasing secretion of thyroid hormones. Usually 250 to 500 mg of guggul is recommended for improving thyroid function.

Coleus Supplement

The root of the plant Coleus forskohlii contains a compound called forskolin, which according to studies is a potential stimulator of the thyroid gland. Consuming 50 to 100 mg of coleus supplement twice or thrice daily boosts thyroid activity.

Dietary Changes

Avoiding or limiting consumption of foods that inhibit activities of the thyroid gland helps to improve its function in people suffering from hypothyroidism.

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel’s sprout and kale, turnip, sweet potatoes, soybeans, corn and lima bean contain compounds called goitrogens that tend to interfere with the activities of the thyroid hormone. However, cooking these vegetables and beans destroys goitrogens. To enjoy the nutritional value of these plant foods without worsening the activity of the thyroid gland, avoid consuming raw vegetables that contain goitrogens.

Hydrotherapy

Applying hot and cold packs to the throat and neck can activate the underactive thyroid gland. Cold pack is applied for a minute followed by application of moist hot pack for about three minutes. This process should be repeated thrice.
