Best Fruits to Help Skin – Healthy Remedies

0

As far as skincare goes, new trends pop up all the time. But one recent trend could have implications for better health for the entire body, including its largest organ, the skin.

A crop of local farmers’ markets has increased as of late, and with it comes access to wholesome fruits and vegetables. And some of the same fruit you may enjoy eating with breakfast or for a healthy snack could have added benefits for your skin.

So why spend a lot of money on products when you can brighten, tighten and reduce wrinkly skin the easy way? The following are five fruits that aren’t just good for the body, they’re excellent for healthy skin, too.

Papaya: This tropical fruit is known to have properties that help firm up skin and prevent sagging. Papaya has beta-carotene, vitamin C, flavonoids, folate, potassium and magnesium. Of the fruits on this list, all have some amount of vitamin C, but papaya is considered an excellent source. This vitamin is essential to the body’s production of collagen, a protein that gives skin its firmness [source: Natural Food Hub].

Avocado: Because they’re more savory than sweet, avocados are often confused as a vegetable. But these green orbs are actually a fruit, one of a tropical nature like papaya. The key to an avocado’s benefit to skin cells are the high levels of monounsaturated fat, considered a “good” fat. Monounsaturated fats help moisturize skin and replace oil that gets removed when washing [source: WebMD].

Strawberry: Next on the list is one of spring and summer’s most sought-after treasures, strawberries. Known for their sweetness, strawberries are a great addition to a bowl of whole grain cereal. But hiding behind that sweetness is a host of health-boosting vitamins and minerals. In addition to high concentrations of vitamin C, strawberries are rich in antioxidants, compounds that help neutralize free radicals in the body. Free radicals are broken down molecules that can cause damage to cells, including skin cells [source: International Food Information Council]. In one study of 12 popular fruits, strawberries ranked the highest in antioxidant content, more than grapes, apples or tomatoes [source: Wang].

Plum: Another sweet fruit that’s good for your skin is the plum. In the same study on antioxidants, plums were just behind strawberries in the amount of antioxidants per serving [source: Wang]. And plums, like many other fruits, are a great source of dietary fiber. Fiber is important in ridding the body of harmful toxins by “escorting” them through the digestive tract [source: Tufts University]. One helpful tip to remember in choosing fruits high in antioxidants is to look for deep purple and red hues, like those in plums, strawberries and other berries [source: International Food Information Council].

Pear: The final fruit on our list comes in a number of shapes and sizes. Sweet treat on their own, pears are also great in a number of recipes. They also happen to be a fantastic source of fiber. Of common fruits, pears provide the greatest amount of fiber. One large pear has 5 grams of fiber, three of which are soluble fiber [source: Tufts University]. Soluble fiber helps rid the body of toxins that damage skin cells.

Arthritis can cause a chronic pain and discomfort that makes it difficult for an individual to cope with on a daily basis.

For those that suffer from this inflammation of the joints, it can leave them feeling almost crippled because they are unable to have full mobility of their joints and simple everyday tasks can be quite complex.

This condition usually affects the older generation, but it can happen even from overuse of a particular part of the body.

Arthritis affects areas such as the fingers and the hands and the knees, making these key body parts very difficult to move. Rather than sitting out from any activity, most people want to find an answer.

They want to seek out a cure for arthritis and at that, prefer a natural cure. Though there are some medications that one can take for their symptoms and flare ups, this daily dose can get a bit cumbersome.

Rather than popping a pill or fooling with a cream that they rub on the affected area each day, they want to find a home remedy that can stand the test of time and limit the frustration and pain that they suffer from.

Interesting Fact:

A study shows that drinkers are less likely to develop several types of arthritis, though Doctors caution people not to take up drinking or increase alcohol consumption to reduce arthritis risk.

The study indicated that drinkers were up to 73% less likely to develop Arthritis.

Apple Cider Vinegar:

It seems that the virtues of apple cider vinegar continue to grow. This basis for many natural home remedies certainly doesn’t disappoint when it comes to arthritis either.

A very well known home remedy in dealing with arthritis and the associated symptoms is to rub hot apple cider vinegar on the affected area each night. You can also create a hand bath by adding the vinegar to warm water and then soaking.

Not only will this help to limit the flare ups, but will also help to lessen the symptoms and the pain.

Castor Oil:

You see castor oil turn up quite a bit when it comes to natural cures as well. When it comes to the pain associated with many different forms of arthritis, castor oil can be a life saver.

Individuals suffering from arthritis pain should rub castor oil over the affected area for quick relief. It can also be heated, put into a pack or made into a paste to reduce inflammation.

Ginger:

Powdered ginger root can be an excellent home remedy to help those who suffer from arthritis. Ginger has been shown to reduce pain and inflammation among other things.

This can be mixed with water and drank or mixed into food. It can also be applied topically in the form of ginger oil. It can be a great natural way of dealing with the pain associated with this condition.

Garlic:

Eating raw cloves of garlic or mixing it into a powder for consumption with mustard seed and sprague can be a very useful home remedy to avoid or limit the symptoms associated with arthritis.

Garlic has anti-inflammatory properties that are effective against arthritis and it is also available in capsules.

Shea Extract:

Shea extract found in the African Shea Tree (the same used in Shea butter) has been found to decrease inflammation and collagen destruction reducing pain in arthritis sufferers.

Marjoram Essential Oil – Healthy Remedies

0

Marjoram Oil relaxes and soothes the muscle groups, and the nervous and cardiovascular systems of the body.

Remember, muscles also include the colon, diaphragm and the heart. We forget because they work on their own, but sometimes they still need our attention!

Because marjoram oil has antispasmodic properties, it can assist those with asthma, bronchitis, whooping cough, constipation or migraine headaches. It unquestionably has some very useful properties.

So, when I think of marjoram essential oil, I definitely associate it with muscle relaxant and support. It is for this reason, that marjoram essential oil is used during Raindrop Technique where it is applied NEAT (undiluted) to the spine.

Did you know that throughout the ages, Marjoram has been called the “joy of the mountains” and the “happiness herb? Yes, emotionally, it is the plant of love and longevity (well, it is, high in antioxidants!).

What is the Genus Species? Origanum majorana

Why is this information important? It is always important to know the genus species of a plant when using and purchasing essential oils.

There are over 30 different species of Marjoram including pot marjoram and wild marjoram. Origanum majorana is sometimes referred to as “Sweet Marjoram”.

Remember, even though species may share some similar properties they are not at all the same, and may not even have medicinal usage. Therefore, just knowing the common name of a plant is usually not enough information.

It has also been reported that Thymus mastichina is often sold under the name marjoram or wild marjoram. So again, do not be confused or mislead by these companies.

Where is the name derived from? Origanum comes from a Greek words “oros” and “ganos” meaning “joy of the mountains”.

Why is this information so important? Its not, it’s just a fun fact!

What Part of the Plant is Used? Leaves

What is the ORAC Value:? 130,900 µTE/100g

Why know about this number? ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. It tells you the antioxidant capacity of a food item. Antioxidants have shown to reduce the risk of age related conditions and cancer! This was developed by the USDA researchers. For instance: Spinach = 1,400; Clove = 1,078,700. Wow! The number for clove is NOT a typo!

Most Interesting Historical Reference?

Did you know that the Romans called marjoram the “herb of happiness”?

What are the Plant Properties? Antispasmodic, antibacterial, anti-infectious, anti-fungal, antiseptic, diuretic, digestive stimulant, arterial vasodilator, diuretic, anti-sexual, expectorant, mucolytic, sedative, tonic, promotes peristalsis.

What are the Documented Benefits of Marjoram and Uses? Arthritis, asthma, blood pressure (regulates), bronchitis, circulatory disorders, colic, cramps, constipation, insomnia, migraines, menopausal problems, rheumatism, reduce water retention, whooping cough, muscular cramps and spasms, aches and pains, sprains.

Kurt Schnaubert, PhD, noted that marjoram essential oil could replace tea tree essential oil if one needed a change from the strong scent of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil).

What is the Aromatic Affect on the Mind? It is mentally strengthening and relaxing. Calms the nerves. Spicy scent and woody.

What is the Spiritual Influence? It is interesting that the Greeks and the Romans associated marjoram with not only love and happiness, but also with transition through physical death.

Death is also a metaphor for transformation which is the key here. Therefore, those who are experiencing the opposite feelings such as disconnected, insecure, unsupported can transform those feelings with the assistance of marjoram oil.

As we release negative feelings and we become more balanced, we are able to accept and love ourselves more fully and restore our power to ourselves.

What Chakra is Affected? The heart and solar plexus chakras.

Use diluted – 50:50 dilution (one part essential oil: one part of vegetable oil). Then,

• Apply several drops (2-4) on location

• Apply to chakras/vitaflex points

• Directly inhale,

• Diffuse, or

• May be used as a dietary supplement.

Can this Oil be used for Pets? Yes, however use diluted unless you are using it in the Raindrop Technique for Horses. For Raindrop for Dogs and Cats, the oils are diluted.

The blends I use for the horses are generally for bacterial infections and muscle spasms. The only time I use it NEAT is during an Equine Raindrop Session.

I have read several books indicating that they have used marjoram oil as an anti-sexual remedy for male dogs (un-neutered, of course). It also has a calming and grounding effect for animals, so I could see where it could definitely work.

Note about Animal Use: Certain oils can be very toxic to cats. Citrus products and oils in particular. Please consult your vet if you are not sure about applying any essential oil to your pet.

Best not to use it internally for our pets as it is a purgative and can be very powerful used in this manner. However, Hyssop is contained in professionally made blends that I use all the time with animals including Relieve It (deep tissue pain) and ImmuPower (immune system).

Vegetables that Help Your Skin – Healthy Remedies

0

You might have complained if your mom tried to make you eat peas as a kid, but she only had your best interests in mind — vegetables are good for you. They’re packed full of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that keep you healthy.

Eating the right ones can even help your skin. These are the ingredients to look for.

Certain vegetables contain antioxidants, which are compounds that might help to cancel out the effects of skin-damaging free radicals inside your body.

Some studies have shown that vitamins C and E, in addition to being full of antioxidants, might help prevent some DNA damage from the sun’s ultraviolet rays [source: WebMD]. Vitamin C is necessary to producing collagen, the substance that gives your skin elasticity.

Beta-carotene, a form of vitamin A called a carotenoid, can help with moisturizing and with healing skin tissue. (Fun fact: Eating lots of carotenoids can change the color of your skin. But don’t fret about a slightly yellowish cast — on a small study of Caucasians, those with yellower skin tone from carotenoids were rated more attractive [source: Shute].) Niacin and folate — types of B vitamins — aid in skin cell regeneration and repairing cell damage [sources: WebMD; Tannis].

So which veggies help your skin the most? There are actually quite a few, so even if you’re not a big fan of the produce section, you should be able to find something that satisfies your taste buds.

1.Spinach. This leafy green tends to be one of the top vegetables that make kids say, “Ew,” but hopefully your taste buds have evolved since kindergarten. In addition to bone-building vitamin K, spinach is chock-full of vitamins C and E as well as beta-carotene and folate.

2.Bell peppers. If you need color in your cuisine, bell peppers are where it’s at. They don’t just come in red, green, orange and yellow — you can even find some black ones. And you may have underestimated bell peppers. They have more than 30 carotenoids and contain more vitamin C per cup than an orange [source: WHFoods].

0

Staph infection is a form of bacterial infection caused by the staphylococcus bacteria. In most cases, staphylococcus bacteria cause minor skin infections. However, in people with weakened immune system, the bacteria may enter the bloodstream and invade the internal organs, leading to life threatening infection.

Antibiotics are the conventional medications for treating staph infections. However, inappropriate use of antibiotics has made the bacteria resistant to a number of popular antibiotics, making treatment extremely difficult. To combat the bacteria, a number of people suffering from staph infections rely on natural remedies.

Herbs that help to strengthen the immune system are considered beneficial for people with staph infections. The immune system can also be stimulated with alternative therapies such as acupuncture and yoga. Herbs with natural antibiotic components can be used for treating the infection.

Natural Ways to Cure Staph Infection

Garlic

With the staphylococcus bacteria becoming resistant to popular antibiotic drugs, health experts are searching for alternative antibiotics to kill the bacteria. Recent studies suggest that garlic can be used as a remedy for staph infection. Allicin, the key sulphur-based component in garlic, is a powerful antibacterial compound that helps to treat infections that do not respond to conventional pharmacological treatment.

Moreover, unlike pharmacological drugs, consuming food substances does not cause adverse reactions. People suffering from staph infection can consume up to 25 grams of garlic daily without bothering about side effects. Topical use of garlic extract or garlic oil can protect wounds from staph infection, thereby preventing the bacteria from invading the inner tissues.

Echinacea

For centuries, in the Native American folk medicines, Echinacea has been used for treating infections. Polysaccharides found in Echinacea stimulate the immune system, thereby strengthening the natural ability of the body to fight staph infection.

About one to two grams of dried Echinacea can be taken thrice a day for 7 to 10 days for treating staph infection. Echinacea ointments can be applied to wounds infected with the staph bacteria.

Goldenseal

Complications of staph infection can be avoided by taking goldenseal at the early stage of the infection. Goldenseal can also be applied to the staph skin infections.

Goldenseal works as a natural antibiotic as well as an immune booster. It contains a powerful antibacterial compound called berberine that can kill a wide range of bacteria. Moreover, by stimulating the white blood cells, berberine helps to strengthen the immune system.

Sage

Savia officinalis, commonly known as garden sage or culinary sage, is a natural antibacterial agent that can be used in staph infection treatment.

According to studies, the essential oil of sage can kill the Staphylococcus bacteria. The essential oil of sage can be applied to wounds infected with the Staphylococcus bacteria. The herb can also be taken internally to speed up the healing process.

Tea Tree Oil

Staph infections of the skin can be treated with tea tree oil. The natural oil of the tea tree is a powerful antibacterial agent that for centuries has been used in native Australian folk medicines for curing a wide range of skin infections. The antibacterial property of tea tree oil is primarily attributed to a compound called terpinen-4-ol.
