Pain is an unpleasant feeling. Pain may occur in any part of the body. Acute (short term) and chronic (long term) are two main types of pain. Pain can be nociceptive or non-nociveptive. Symptoms associated with pain include inflammation of the affected area, stiffness, irritability, difficulty in the movement of the affected area and so on. Pain may also result in anxiety, mood swings, depression, fatigue or stress. Various herbal remedies for pain are mentioned below.
Feverfew
Feverfew is also referred to as ‘’ Tanacetum Parthenium’’. This herb is a member of the sunflower family. It has anti-inflammatory properties. Feverfew is an effective herb which can be used to treat abdominal pain, tooth pain, arthritis pain or headache. Drinking feverfew tea several times in a day can help in reducing headache and pain resulting from arthritis. Feverfew tincture can also be consumed on a frequent basis to relieve abdominal pain. This herb is not recommended for pregnant women.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera has pain relieving properties. Applying aloe vera gel on the affected area on a regular basis can provide relief from chronic body pain. Massaging the painful area with a mixture of fresh aloe vera pulp and mustard oil on a daily basis can provide effective results.
Another alternative is to rub a mixture of aloe vera pulp and honey on the affected area to reduce pain and swelling. Intake of aloe vera juice 2 to 3 times in a day can decrease the joint pain resulting from osteoporosis or gout.
Devil’s Claw
An infusion made by brewing devil’s claw root in water can be consumed (strained) on a regular basis to cure joint or muscle pain. This herb may also provide effective results in the treatment of lower back pain or arthritis pain. It is essential to note that individuals suffering from gallstones, stomach or duodenal ulcers should not use this herb.
Turmeric
Turmeric has curcumin which can reduce pain and inflammation. Consumption of turmeric powder (200 mg to 300 mg) with a glass of warm milk several times in a day can help an individual in treating pain. Rubbing a mixture of turmeric powder and coconut oil on the painful area can provide the desired results.
A paste made with the use of turmeric powder and sesame oil can also be directly applied on the affected area. Another option is to spread a paste made by mixing turmeric and ginger powder with water on a cloth and tie the cloth as a bandage around the painful area to reduce the symptoms associated with pain.
Olive Oil
Olive oil can also be used to deal with pain. Regular consumption of food items prepared with olive oil can relieve abdominal pain. A mixture of olive oil and lemon juice can be consumed to treat kidney or gallstone pain. Another option is to apply a mixture of olive oil and turmeric powder on the affected area. Massaging the painful area with a mixture of olive and peppermint oil on a daily basis can provide relief from muscle or joint pain.
