Herbal Remedies For Gerd

Gerd (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is commonly referred to as ‘’Acid Reflux’’. The problem of gerd is caused by factors such as improper eating habits, smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol or caffeine, obesity and medication. Symptoms of gerd include heartburn, pain in the chest, bitter taste in the mouth, dry cough, acid regurgitation, difficulty in swallowing the food and so on. The problem of gerd can be cured with the use of below mentioned herbal remedies.

Slippery Elm

Slippery elm is also known as ‘’ Ulmus Rubra’’. This herb is a member of the elm family. Drinking slippery elm tea prepared by boiling slippery elm bark in water 2 to 3 times in a day can help in reducing the acid formation which may result in the problem of gerd.

Slippery elm tincture or dried slippery elm powder can also be consumed with a glass of water several times on a daily basis to obtain the desired results.

Marshmallow Root

Marshmallow root is also referred to as ‘’Althaea Officinalis’’. Intake of a mixture prepared by soaking the dried marshmallow root (1 teaspoon) in water (1 cup) multiple times in a day can help in curing the burning sensation resulting from gerd. This herb may also help in protecting the esophagus membrane against acid.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera can be used to relieve gerd. Consumption of this herb may heal the esophageal membrane.

Aloe vera gel (1 teaspoon) can be consumed 20 to 30 minutes prior to each meal to treat various symptoms associated with the problem of gerd. Drinking aloe vera juice diluted with apple or grape juice on a frequent basis can provide effective results.

Basil

The symptoms of gerd can be cured with the use of basil. Intake of tea prepared by steeping fresh basil leaves in water several times in a day can help in the treatment of gerd. Honey can also be added to basil tea. Iced tea prepared with the use of basil leaves can be consumed 2 to 3 times in a day to obtain the desired results. Consumption of food items containing fresh or dried basil is also recommended for dealing with the problem of gerd.

Chamomile

Chamomile may also be used to obtain relief from gerd. Drinking chamomile tonic (strained) prepared with the use of dried chamomile and water on a regular basis can cure the burning sensation resulting from gerd.

Roman or German chamomile extract can also be consumed on a frequent basis to reduce the discomfort associated with gerd.

Licorice Root

Another herbal remedy for gerd is licorice root. This herb has healing properties. Licorice root (250 mg to 500 mg) can be consumed before meals to treat various symptoms associated with gerd. It is advisable to consult a doctor before taking this herb.

Parsley

Parsley has digestive and anti-inflammatory properties. Regular consumption of parsley can help in reducing the heartburn resulting from gerd.

Fresh parsley can also be added to salad items or vegetables. This herb may also help in controlling the formation of acid which leads to gerd.
